Aging in Place

What is Aging-in-Place?

A significant concern as people grow older is that they may have to leave their home.  Most American seniors desire to stay in their homes for the rest of their lives. In fact an AARP survey found this number to be greater than 80% of seniors.  This “stay at home” approach is also known as “Aging-in-Place”.   Simply stated Aging-in-Place is choosing to live in your own home, in a non-healthcare environment using products, services and conveniences to enable you to stay in your home.

Aging in Place allows you to live in a comfortable setting and a familiar community with memories. We understand that a certain amount of control is lost when one leaves home. This “control” provides the underpinning to our feelings of dignity, quality of life and independence. One’s home is a strong element in that sense of security.

Aging-in-Place and Safety

Falls among our rapidly growing population of older Americans are fast becoming a serious national health problem.  The CDC’s research reports that by the year 2020, the annual direct and indirect cost related to fall injuries could reach $54 billion.  The average cost of a fall today is $19,000.

Falls also come at a great personal cost to the individual and family.  Falls in our elderly population are painful physically and emotionally.  There is hospital care, rehabilitation and loss of mobility. The ripple effect on the loved ones is immense, especially when is faced with the need for 24hr care or long term care in a facility.

Simple Measures Equal Big Payoffs

The Center for Disease Control, National Safety Council and a number of Aging Councils produce a great deal of data regarding falls, the resulting injury and cost.  All the statistics are truly astounding.  But what is more astounding is that a good majority of falls are preventable.
